Verbal Parental Permission Notice for Existing Library Activities

Note: this notice will be posted in the physical space where library activities that are part of the research are taking place, as well as on the online registration page(s) for the activities in question.

Note to parents and guardians of children participating in this activity: research is taking place during this activity. By allowing your child to participate in this specific library activity, you are granting permission for your child to take part in research which Natalie Gologorsky is conducting for her Ph.D. dissertation at Rutgers University on children’s learning about their own, non-practical interests in the library.

This research will consist of her observing, participating in, and taking notes on your child’s interactions and learning during this scheduled activity. She will not be writing down your child’s name or any other identifying information about them, only their interests and learning activities, and identify them with a pseudonym (fake name) where necessary. These steps are taken to protect the privacy and confidentiality of your child. She may also take photos of any physical products your child creates as part of their learning, without either your child or their name being visible in the photo. If you do not wish for your child to take part in this research, you may approach Natalie (she will have a name tag on) in the library to ask her to exclude your child from her research notes, and she will do this.

If you have any questions, please either approach her in the library to ask (she will have a name tag on) or contact her at natalie.gologorsky@rutgers.edu or her faculty advisor, Dr. Anthony Wright, at anthony.wright@rutgers.edu. If you have questions about your child’s rights as a research participant, you can contact the Rutgers University Human Research Protection Program/Institutional Review Board at IRBOffice@research.rutgers.edu or at (732) 235-9806.
